State Parks

Numerous state parks offer great day trips for family members both young and old. They include:

Davis Mountains State Park - Both Indian and Cavalry history come to life at this historic state park in a beautiful mountain setting. (Fort Davis Chamber of Commerce 1-800-524-3015)

McDonald Observatory, Fort Davis, TexasFort Davis is also the home of the world-famous McDonald Observatory, home to giant telescopes that watch the heavens 1-877-984-7827

Monahans Sandhills State Park - Giant dunes of sand still reveal Indian artifacts to those who explore the terrain. 432-943-2092

Balmorhea State Park – A natural spring-fed swimming pool where you can literally swim with the fish. 432-375-2370
 

National Parks

Within a few hours drive from Odessa you can experience three renowned national parks:

Big Bend, Chisos MountainsBig Bend National Park –Mountainous setting along the Rio Grande River that separates Texas from Mexico. River rafting and hiking trails abound. For more information call 432-477-2251

Guadalupe Mountains National Park – Rugged terrain where both desert and mountain flora and fauna meet. Features the tallest peak in Texas (Guadalupe Peak) and Texas’ only running trout stream and free-roaming elk herd. 432-828-3251
