Area Attractions

 

Fort Davis, Texas- Fort Davis is special place to visit. Fort Davis, Jeff Davis County and the Davis Mountains are reminiscent of an earlier old west Texas—a Texas before 90-minute commutes, traffic jams, chain stores and graffiti-scrawled walls. A must visit for the Fort Davis National Historic Site, the McDonald Observatory, the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center and Botanical Gardens, and the Overland Trail Museum. 


 

Marfa, Texas –This small town, situated on a high plateau of the Chihuahuan Desert between three mountain ranges, is a charming place to visit.  Marfa is famously known for their mysterious Marfa lights, and the hotel Paisano, where the movie “Giant” was filmed.

Million Barrel Museum LogoMillion Barrel Museum- Along the eastern end of Monahans on Business 20 is the Million Barrel Museum, a 14.5 acre site of historic potpourri. Dominating the scene is a large elliptical oil storage tank. Built in 1928, the tank was designed to hold over a million barrels of crude oil.

 

Old Sorehead Trade Days gathers vendors from all over Texas and the southwest. If you can imagine it, you can find it at Old Sorehead Trade Days. Woodcrafts, wearable art, hand-poured candles, metal art -- the list goes on and on!

 

Permian Basin Petroleum Museum- This fascinating museum traces the history of the oil industry in the Permian Basin.  Located on I-20 in Midland, Texas.  432-683-4403

 

World's First Rodeo Logo


Pecos, Texas- Home of the world’s first rodeo! Established in 1883 the West of the Pecos Rodeo was the world's first rodeo and Pecos continues the tradition each summer. Pecos is also famously known for their vine ripe Pecos cantaloupes.

 

 

State Parks 

 

Numerous state parks offer great day trips for family members both young and old. They include:

 

Davis Mountains State Park- Both Indian and Cavalry history come to life at this historic state park in a beautiful mountain setting. (Fort Davis Chamber of Commerce 1-800-524-3015)

 

 McDonald Observatory, Fort Davis

Fort Davis is also the home of the world-famousMcDonald Observatory, home to giant telescopes that watch the heavens 1-877-984-7827 

 

 

Monahans Sandhills State Park - Giant dunes of sand still reveal Indian artifacts to those who explore the terrain. 432-943-2092 

 

 

Balmorhea State Park – A natural spring-fed swimming pool where you can literally swim with the fish. 432-375-2370

 

 

National Parks

 

Within a few hours drive from Odessa you can experience three renowned national parks:

 

Big Bend National Park –Mountainous setting along the Rio Grande River that separates Texas from Mexico. River rafting and hiking trails abound. For more information call 432-477-2251 

 

 

Guadalupe Mountains National Park – Rugged terrain where both desert and mountain flora and fauna meet. Features the tallest peak in Texas (Guadalupe Peak) and Texas’ only running trout stream and free-roaming elk herd. 432-828-3251Carlsbad Caverns, Carlsbad, New Mexico 

 


Carlsbad Caverns National Park – These world-renowned natural caverns just across the border in New Mexico feature stunning underground stalagmites and stalactites. Awe inspiring “bat flights” occur throughout the year. For more information call 505-785-2232.
